Nearly there

Next in the queue for some attention

The SU carb, was an experiment that worked out quite well, a reconditioned HS2 1.25" carb originally set up for a Morris Minor 1000 car. It hasnt been changed from the Morris setup, I'm sure the carburation can be improved considerably, so I have been doing some homework!

Final drive ratios

While i have the scout on the lift, i decided to take note of some figures, to gelp get the best out of the stroker motor. I know that these figures will give me only theoretical top speeds etc but its good to know what gearing changes will do to your rev/speed ratio once you are on the road.
First off, with the cylinders fitted set the rear piston to tdc and put a chalk mark on the rear tyre, selected 1st gear and rotated the wheel for one full revolution of the crank... measured the distance travelled, same again for 2nd and top gear.






The Scout is fitted with a 24t gearbox/trans sprocket and a BSA qd rear wheel with a 49t sprocket giving a final drive ratio of 2.04:1

The BSA hub won't give me much scope for sprocket changes, so I'm thinking of changing to a Honda CB72e rear hub, with the advantage of a TLS rear brake, to let me try a range of sprocket sizes.... I reckon an FDR of 1.5:1 should work with the motor without losing too much acceleration

Tanks for comparison

Tank on the left chromed steel Junior Scout weighing in at 2.88kg the tank on the right an aluminium 648 Scout spec tank, its LH partner weighs in at 1.65kg ... Bigger bulkier but almost half the weight!

Sorting out the Sport Scout heads

Just been in to see John at Moray Firth Precision Engineering in Inverness, he's just finished skimming and matching the 640 heads for the Sport Scout. When I stripped the top end off the motor at the tail end of last summer, I found that the heads were running at different compression ratios, and that the rear head was badly in need of a skim.
My pistons pop up above the cylinder beck by 0.087" .. John has matched the pop up in the head to 0.118" to allow some clearance, if more is needed I can sort that out between the base and cylinder head gaskets.

Big Base

The ‘Big Base’ Indian 648s were the ultimate development of flathead engine technology, with high-dome pistons carrying two compression rings and one oil ring. The name came from the huge oil capacities, because the bikes were fitted with extra-large sumps designed to help engines cope with the stresses of racing.



Its thought that only seven factory Daytona Sport Scout 648's are stll in existence, so the chances of ever owning one are highly unlikely.

With a lot of Indian tuners still chasing ultimate performance for their vintage racing Scouts, it is possible to build a replica motor, up until now the sticking point has been availability of cylinders... looks like that may not be an issue any more!

1928 abused 101 frame.
Custom alloy petrol/oil tank.
1928 750cc 101 bottom end.
Sports scout top end.
4 speed foot change transmission. (Royal Enfield)
Hand clutch.
Good brakes (look like early Honda ones to me .SP)

'37 Bonneville Scout flattracker

Back in the summer Wes White, of Four Aces Cycle Supply,  put a pic up on Facebook of him kickstarting a Sport Scout flattracker.... There wasnt much more info available about the bike other than it has some race history and was bound for England.
This evening I got an email from my friend Tony Carabine at Indian Trading, with some pictures of the same bike attached. Its a 1937 45cu" Sport Scout motor housed in a 1950's Warrior vertical twin frame. Has been raced by Dodge Bros. Racing. Its now up for sale here in the UK

Sorting out some issues

While I'm waiting for the cylinder heads to come back from the machine shop, i stripped the front end to fit a Hyde forkbrace and a set of progressive springs that have been lying in wait. While it was apart i checked the tubes with a straight edge, LH tube is slightly bent, New set of tubes and seals will get it sorted out!

A bit about my pots

With the the cylinders off the motor i have been able to check them over properly. Front pot is a square based one that has been relined at some point on std 2.875" bore, rear pot is an earlier round base one still on its original bore. The pop up pistons are of unknown origin marked 005 on the tops. The head bolt tappings have all been helicoiled to m12 at some point then the castings have been nickel plated.

Rings

Moen at IPE put me on to a company in Somerset, Cox & Turner . I called John Cox yesterday and told him about my ring issues, gave him the sizes and this morning i have a set of quality rings in my hand, one piece oil ring and two compresson rings per piston.

Homework

Lots of emails and phonecalls over the weekend trying to source a set of new pistons and rings for the Scout. Moen at IPE doesnt have any that would suit my motor, but has been very helpfully looking for alternatives. Rocky at Iron Wigwam has big oversize ones of the correct type on his ebay store but is currently at Bonneville with his Dreamcatcher streamlimer, outta town til early September. I have cleaned up the damaged piston with a hand file and polishing mop, it still has some scoring but no raised edges now. In the bore its now .012" clearance on the skirt compared to .006" on the front one. Thinking of refitting them with new rings for now, while i wait for pistons to come from the States.
