Back in the summer Wes White, of Four Aces Cycle Supply, put a pic up on Facebook of him kickstarting a Sport Scout flattracker.... There wasnt much more info available about the bike other than it has some race history and was bound for England.

This evening I got an email from my friend Tony Carabine at Indian Trading, with some pictures of the same bike attached. Its a 1937 45cu" Sport Scout motor housed in a 1950's Warrior vertical twin frame. Has been raced by Dodge Bros. Racing. Its now up for sale here in the UK

Sorting out some issues

While I'm waiting for the cylinder heads to come back from the machine shop, i stripped the front end to fit a Hyde forkbrace and a set of progressive springs that have been lying in wait. While it was apart i checked the tubes with a straight edge, LH tube is slightly bent, New set of tubes and seals will get it sorted out!

A bit about my pots

With the the cylinders off the motor i have been able to check them over properly. Front pot is a square based one that has been relined at some point on std 2.875" bore, rear pot is an earlier round base one still on its original bore. The pop up pistons are of unknown origin marked 005 on the tops. The head bolt tappings have all been helicoiled to m12 at some point then the castings have been nickel plated.

Moen at IPE put me on to a company in Somerset, Cox & Turner . I called John Cox yesterday and told him about my ring issues, gave him the sizes and this morning i have a set of quality rings in my hand, one piece oil ring and two compresson rings per piston.

Lots of emails and phonecalls over the weekend trying to source a set of new pistons and rings for the Scout. Moen at IPE doesnt have any that would suit my motor, but has been very helpfully looking for alternatives. Rocky at Iron Wigwam has big oversize ones of the correct type on his ebay store but is currently at Bonneville with his Dreamcatcher streamlimer, outta town til early September. I have cleaned up the damaged piston with a hand file and polishing mop, it still has some scoring but no raised edges now. In the bore its now .012" clearance on the skirt compared to .006" on the front one. Thinking of refitting them with new rings for now, while i wait for pistons to come from the States.

Managed to haul the Scout into the jewellery workshop at the shop in Achnasheen

I noticed some scuffing to the rear cylinder when I shined a proper light down the bores this morning. Decided to strip off the cylinders and inspect ...... glad I did!

First thing I found was that there were no spreader washers fitted on the base nuts, and they were not very tight

Pistons havent been fitted with proper oil control rings and none of the rings were gapped correctly, the pair in the bottom groove had seized and the piston is very badly scored!

Front piston has some minor scuffing but the same issue with the two rings in place of oil control ring

While i am waiting for the new gaskets to arrive i have got busy with the dremel cleaning up the combustion chambers. The front head was blowing the most and had a lot of carbon build up around the sparkplug area..... The casting in this area was quite rough, possibly been repaired at some point.

After a quick clean up, still to finish off with some fine emery and the polishing mop.

The front head will need lightly skimmed to make sure the mating surface is spot on. The rear one has not had anywhere near as much machining in the past and is 2.5mm thicker meaning the compression ratio on the front pot is considerably higher than the rear! Will have to get the rear head skimmed to match the front and check all the clearances. Also ordered special 4mm thick 25mm od washers to suit the head bolts. The ones i had used are looking a bit mashed!

Been trying to work out why the motor has been running rough, it started to need a bit of choke to keep it ticking over and seemed to be fouling the plugs all the time. At first i thought it might be the manifold nipple on the rear pot, they are as tight as they can go... So this morning i whipped the heads off, both James gaskets have blown between the head bolts and the cylinder. New copper gaskets on order!

Finished off the breather pipework this afternoon with a 1/4" return oil pipe reducing to 1/8" T'ed into the 3/8" open breather on the timing plug hole. This will let excess oil return to the crankcase sump from the Fossbilt baffled breather tank.

Started the motor on the paddock stand and let it warm up, considerably less smoky and no oil coming out of the breather valve ....... more road testing to come.
Next, some alteration to the sump pick up to make sure the pump gets the excess oil away from tbe crank as efficiently as possible and to minimise drain back down the return line.

Back at the tail end of last summer, I had started to mock up a "left overs" Scout using my spare 741 motor in a Junior Scout frame with BSA A/B series forks and wheels and an early pre unit Triumph 4 speed transmission.

As the Sport Scout progressed and the Chout gathering continued I realised that I needed to sell some more parts to get what I needed for the two main projects. A 4 way deal was struck with Grizzy, Shaun, Moen and myself which ended up with me getting a complete Hecker 101 front end for the Chout. Grizzy got two frames, a '24 Raleigh frame for his "Blunderbuss" project (more later),and a swing arm Indian Fire Arrow frame (re badged RE Clipper).Shaun got the Junior frame for his "Cochise" project, along with a selection of BSA wheels and other odds n sods.

Grizzy and Neil drove up from the south back in May and filled "dirty Sharon" (the old veedub) with frames and wheels and headed back down the hillbilly highway...... Grizzy takes up the tale

I thought you might be interested in the progress of the valuble ( and rare ) vintage motorcycle parts ( old-crap ! ) I relived you of last May after my fleating visit from the Londons patio ( Kent ) .

First from the " Highland Hoard " , the Sir Walter frame ! meet " Blunderbuss " , as you will appreciate it is very much in the " Blue Peter " stage ( sticki back plaza an all ! ) but it looks and will be a feasible proposition . I shortened the sadle tube by 2.1/2 " and re - brazed the engine lug back on , I lengthened ( slug's ) the rear frame down tubes 2" as well . its exactly what I wanted and the round tank Bezza fork crown is just purfic 'as well . lots of Re - tubing , and stuff to make but yes mate , should make an old 16H a whole bag of fun .

Then all Blunderbuss play stoped as Shaun of the panthers was booked in to see if all this Junior Scout stuff was going to be any good for his 741 engine and box .

Well , some and some is the answer to that , the front frame is as near a 741 as you could wish for and the heads up from yourself that Bezza forkes ( A's n B's ) were a close enough fit and have an uncanny look a like and resemblance to the 50's Indian Warrior and Arrow it makes no difference !

I found the easy-est way to fit the fork is turn up bearing cups to fit the Indian frame and the Bezza bearings , as you can see in this first shot the forks are a little " Chopper "ish and need to sit about 2.1/2 " lower , all good so far.

However , the rear frame whatever way you try , will not accept a Scout gearbox , the only way is as you found , use of a brit box would be the only way. SO ! out with Mr Angrygrinder ( 9" ) and cut the hell out of Amerrycan heratage ! ( sorry chaps , friendly fire ! ) . I found some useable sidecar lugs from the " hord " to which I turned down to accept some 1" tube , the lugs were hot rivetted to the rear wheel lugs , the tubes were bent to fit , then the whole lot brazed togeather , the width of the top rails have been made

2" wider . the bottom brace is 1.1/8th tube Its much the same as a stock 741 in style but slightly close-couple it has to compromise the length of the forks .

With the rear like it is putting 741 gas tanks would have made it look even shorter! What was needed is a pair of Junior gas tanks, ( no chance ) so I as I have used a ES2 tank in the past ( Geronimo ) and it don't look too out of place , thats what I tryed on this we beastie, 9" Mr Angry and the tank is now "2 narrower , yes that is gas welded , I also took an inch and a half off the bottom as well .

Well this is as far as we got and I dont think this 741 stroker would look out of place in a flat-track class " C " race !

the exhaust took a bit of buggering about , front pipe made an inch longer and set upwords to match the rear .

as the ES2 tank , now mutch modified is just gas , I had to make an oil tank much on the line of the Daytona 648 tank .

GT 750 rear wheel with the cush narrowed , YDS Yamaha front onto the Beeza fork with some spindle spacers and buggerin , seat earholes , on the rear frame, gear shifter , yes not a bad stab at it and still a lot to do like foot pegs , controls, kick stand , but I'v handed all over to Shaun , he's got a lot of nutting and bolting before 2nd fix .

Stroker Breathing advice from Performance Indian

"Hi Steve, Jim Mosher here.

I too have had a ton of breather trouble from

my 57" Scout. My friend Matt Blake also had alot of oil loss issues. Once, I

had oil coming out my distributor hole where my magneto is installed. In

general a good breather system requires a quick acting check valve like the

"Krank-Vents" that I sell. The next thing is that the Krank-Vent has to be

mounted above the connection to the motor, and not running down hill. The

motor needs a generous hole for the air to escape. I am using the normal

Scout breather hole at the rear/top of the pump with a 3/8" 45 degree hose

fitting going upward about 7"-8" into the Krank-Vent. Lately, I have been

tapping a 1/4" pipe thread hole for a fitting on the flat surface of the

right case just behind the distributor mount for more air to escape from the

cam chest. I will tie the (2) fittings together into a "Y" fitting made of

thin walled 1/2" tubing that will connect to the 1/2" inlet of the larger

Krank-Vent. Then run a 1/2" hose back to the rear of the bike. I like

everything going uphill with large tubing to slow the air speed, reduce

drag, and to work against gravity. Some oil will collect in the tube, and

then run downhill back to the cam chest. On my Twin 57" Scout Bonneville

racer, I took it one more step. I found that oil can get into the oil pump

cavities, and not drain off well, so I found a spot on the cam cover where I

drilled a 1/4" hole to let oil get back to the cam chest. I will try to find

a pic of this hole for you. Please note the picture shows how to modify a

cam cover so you can use an aluminum pump like a 648!

One of the things that make me wonder alot is the fact that crank-case

pressure can work for you as well as work against you. The pressure is handy

for forcing oil mist into small places like into the cam chest (that's why

it is a good idea to drill a series of 1/8" holes in the cam chest of the

right case just under the intersection of the lifter arched pad, and the

push rods for better oiling like they did on Chiefs in '52-'53). The

pressure will also force oil through a small hole into the pump to oil the

rear cam gear that drives the distributor. It also pushes oil up the push

rod guides, and the valve guides. Please note that it is a good thing to get

this oil into the intake guide, but not beyond the valve guide into the

combustion chamber, and that is why I am a firm believer in intake valve

guide seals! The pressure can also aid in forcing oil into the drive side

bearings. Indian installed the baffles in the cases, so that this pressure

would be somewhat blocked preventing too much oil from getting on the

cylinder walls. Today with better honing, and rings, we no longer need these

baffles. On the other hand, it is better to get the crank-case into a vacuum

state by using a quick acting check valve to let air out, but not back in.

This allows the pistons to come down without having to pump air out of the

motor. And when the check valve closes, the motor will not have to pull air

back into the motor. This process actually causes the rings to seal better,

hence increasing manifold vacuum, and saving the horsepower needed to move

air both in, and out of the cases. I have been running Krank-Vents for years

on HOT bikes without any oiling issues, so I guess they get enough oil

everywhere they need it. Maybe todays oil is better as well.

Back to the oil spewing of a 57"er. You want alot of breather outlet area

in places where there is not alot of churning oil mist, and as of yet, I

haven't come up with the perfect solution. I will though, because I have to

make my Twin-Scout perform without loosing oil. My 57"er has Duff's original

prototype vent on the left case timing hole, and it picks up some oil mist

from the spinning flywheels. I don't recommend this hole for venting. I like

the cam chest area the most for venting, because it is less turbulent. There

needs to be more holes between the cam area, and the flywheel area, so the

air can freely pass through (look at a Norton cam chest!). There may need to

be some small sheet metal baffles inside the cam chest near the outlet holes

to discourage oil splash from exiting. I will be working on this in the

future, and I'd like to see you post this E-mail, so others will also "get

on board" to find a good 57" breathing solution.

As for the Twin-Scout, it won't run at Bonneville untill next year,

because I am feverishly working on (2) Bonneville bikes for this year's

Speed-Week at Bonneville. One is a Norton that we ran last year that

actually beat the worlds record by .002 MPH, but they didn't give us the

record, because it was too close. (The Bastards)! The other is a HOT 45"

Scout that already holds the record. Two years ago, he set the record, and

last year he added my cams, and lifters, which made the bike go 30 MPH

faster! This year with a completely new motor, he should go faster yet. I

just got my sheet metal finished for the Twin-Scout, and soon it will get

fully disassembled, painted, and put back together. I am getting it titled,

and liscenced, so I can develope it on the back roads of New Mexico before

running it on the salt. Here's a pic of it with the sheet metal models in

place.

After the run to the BRC show last week I noticed that the oil level was down in the tank, there was a lot of oil coming out of the crank breather and onto the rear of rhe bike . This morning i fitted a second 3/8th bore breather from the rear of the oil pump ( which vents the crankcases through the timing chest) i also fitted a coffee can catch tank and fed all three breathers into it. A 5 mile run later and all seems to be workong, no loss of oil and no smoke, hope to get a longer run tomorrow.

Finished building the 19" front wheel yesterday ready to fit tomorrow morning. Today i set the fat 16" wheel up on the trueing stand and centred the hub, had to move the rim over 3mm then trued it to a 10 thou side throw. The old Borrani has been through the wars a bit with a couple of flat spots and some kerbing damage but it runs true now!

Got my MOT today

All my paperwork in hand, insurance, fresh MOT cert, dating letter from the Indian club, V(whatever) form all filled out and signed and dated, I loaded the Scout back into the trailer and headed round to the LVLO in Inverness. First one there ready for opening at 9am I took my ticket and got called before the stoney faced government official. i presented my paperwork and told her that the bike was outside in the trailer ready for inspection. Her response floored me...... due to changes in policy and budget constraints, the Inverness office no longer has the facility to carry out registration inspections!!!
I would have to leave my paperwork, pay a £55 fee and wait to be contacted before making an appointment when an inspector was available to check the bike over, this may take one month or more depending on the availability of inspectors!
Why does our government insist on making life so fucking complicated???

Stripped the tanks off again and sorted a couple of small leaks with some ptfe tape. Changed the front wheel to a 19"er to see how it afffects the handling..... massive improvement! acouple of 2 to 3 mile road tests, reset the tickover, and checked the crank breather is working ok - all good 8-)

Just back from Richi's workshop where we got the tanks back onto the Sport Scout, rigged up the temp oil lines and a few kicks later had a running motor..... sounds great through the new pipes!
Disengaged the clutch with the new Fossbilt pedal assembly, eased it back into first, hooked the clutch back slowly with my toe until it start...ed to bite, a wee paddle and we're off ........ absolute magic 8o))

Its a bit of a tradition to name Indian specials with a suitable Indian name. In amongst my friends' and the bikes that I know of we have a Geronimo, a Cochise, a 2face, theres a Running Bare, Blue Smoke. Iknow of at least 3 Pochahontases (should that be Pochahonti???)
I've held off from naming the Stroker Scout until now, mainly because until it was running i thought that would be a bit premature. I wanted a name that was a bit of a cross over between the native American tradition and also something that reflected the place where the SS was conceived - Achnasheen (from the gaelic achadh na sine Field of Rainstorms) So I was looking for the Souix word for rain when i foud this fella - Ité Omáǧažu Chief Rain in the Face of the Hunkpapa Souix, he fought against Custer at the Little Big Horn

can't think of a better name for an Indian motocycle running around Strathbran with no front guard!

Took the lhs Chief tank in to Dr Foss's workshop tonight and tried it for size, exactly the same profile as the 741 Scout tanks but the front mount sits the tank about one inch lower, bringing the underside of the tank down to run parallel to the cross bar. The cut outs at the steering stem casting and rear frame casting line up perfectly too, so the tales of late Chief tanks and Sport Scout ones being the same (apart from the lower front mount) are true!

Been checking valve spring lengths today, standard Chief springs, Bonneville followers and Shunk cams wont work, the springs bind up, 741b springs wouldnt bind but may be too weak for the job, tomorrow I'll check the installed/full lift pressures!

A month or so back I called Jim Mosher at Performance Indian in Santa Fe, New Mexico. We had a bit of a chat about cams and options for a hotrod Chief motor. He was working on plotting various cam lobes to put more info on his Cam Study web pages. he let slip that he had a set of original Shunk race cams and that he would be prepared to part with them after he had completed his study. a deal was struck, to include a set of new bonneville lifters, cam gears and shafts. This morning a gift box arrived from New Mexico 8)

Just back from a business trip south of the border, came back to find lots of updates on Moen's IPE site Lars Neilsen took the Saltcracker, blown Indian 741b special to a best of 88.198mph, fantastic result for it's first time out, cant wait to see how they get on next time!

Jim sent a bit more info about the twin engined Bonneville Scout "The Twin-Enginned Stroker Scout will be on the salt next year. We're still running a Norton out this year for the last time. We are at 153 MPH on the Norton, which is really fast for an old Brit bike. Here's a pic of my Twin-Enginned cranks with S&S wheels, and Carrillo rods "

"The Scout Hot Rod project bike is a 45", but with Bonneville pistons, milled, and relieved heads, and my racing lifters, and cams. With dual drag pipes, 12 volt electronic ignition, and the CV carb, it should really go. I just refurbished the top end of Matt Blake's 57"er, and it uses Honda 250 Elsinore pistons from the late 70's. Their standard bore is equivelant to .040" over Scout pistons. You have to cut a relief in the heads a funny way to clear the piston's small dome. Plus they use .750" piston pins! I use custom forged pistons by Aries Pistons (or Venolia), and S&S forged flywheels that use standard Scout pinion pins. I always modify the right case for a '47 Chief oil scraper. You have to modify the scrapers though. My little "Frankenstein" Stroker Scout has alot of head work with 7 7/8:1 compression, and Bonneville lifters with Shunk Daytona racing cams, and it is extremely fast. I can't run pump gas though. I keep some race gas, or av-gas here to add to the premium pump gas, and it is then happy. My cams, and lifters will be available very soon, and I will have 8 seperate grinds to play with. I have a full dyno, and I will test all my cams with my lifters in both my 57" Stroker Scout, and the Hot Rod 45"er that I'm building now, so I should get some interesting data."

Sport Scout progress

Yesterday i dropped in to my mate Kevin's bike shop on th eway to work, I was looking for a set of pads for the Brembo caliper going on the back of the Stroker Scout, a pair of pads were sorted out, on the off chance I asked if he knew what size of master cylinder would suit the caliper, he dissapeared back shop and five minutes later appeared with a pedal assembly complete with Nissin cylinder and all the fittings - total bill £25 8-)

Today I pulled the pedal assembly appart and worked out the fixings to put it onto the Scout footboard bracket, only one extra hole to drill and a bush needs made up on the lathe to fit over the hex rod footboard mount for the pedal to pivot on.

I'll need to make up a heat shield to protect the cylinder from the exhaust.

Sorting out the rear frame for the Sport Scout

Ive been looking at the caliper mount on the 741 frame section I have on the Sport Scout, it didnt work out the way I wanted. The 741 rear frame is narrower and I wanted to tuck the Triumph caliper neatly in behind the V of the frame. Today I pulled the Sport Scout rear section i have from under the bench and tried a T140 wheel and caliper for size. Fitted up nicely and the toque arm from my old T140 chop lined up perfectly with the Indian casting provided - bonus!

I recently bought a set of primary cases and intermediate gear for my 1933 Chief engoine and transmission, I was assured by the seller that they were the right type for my motor, but when they turned up on this side of the pond I found that I had bought a set of 20's Scout cases (already got a set of those!) So, has anyone got a serviceable set of 1933 Chief primaries and an intermediate gear available?

"One of my books says -31 and on Chief got larger engine gear and
requires appropriate cover. -33 got cast in gen.drive. -34 has chain.
You got the larger clutch and If you don't need the -33 cast in generator
drive one or two years only, most likely you could use earlier helical gear
cover. Chief started in -22 I think, Scout started in -28 with the large
cluch. Or use Chief -31 to 33 cover with the larger engine gear. Then you
got a choice of 2 primary gearings. Spin the box faster with the larger gear
or slower with the smaller."

I'm not going to need a generator so I have a couple of options, if I can find a set of cases!

Ivan Young from Marseille got in touch via the Chout Breeders blog, he's building a Chout, turns out he's got a bit of a collection of Stroker Scouts too!

The 101 is stroked to approx 900cc using WLA wheels, linkert carb from a WLA with Bonneville Chief venturi

He built his wife this 45" (750cc) 741b bobber using WLA flywheels

and this tidy little Terrot/Indian hybrid which also has a 45" WLA wheeled stroker motor. Terrot main frame Indian 741b rear/lower frame - a French take on an Indian hotrod special!

Junior's engine plates work in progress

Started to rough out a set of temporary alloy rear engine plates to mount the Triumph gearbox behind the Scout motor in the Junior Scout frame. A lot of chain drilling, using a standard engine plate as a template, a bit of work with the angle grinder and they are shaping up. Once Ive tried them for size they will get dressed up with a hand file. I plan to use drilled steel plates for the final assembly to add some support to the lower rear frame.

Richi Foss in Inverness did a crackin job of replacing the broken fins and sorting a missing corner on the mounting flange on both the 741 cylinders going on Juniors motor and the repairs to the 1933 Chief cylinders , he also de-raked the ex Chris Ireland 741b frame - really impressed with his workmanship

Yesterday I made up a temporary subframe fitted up the Triumph box to check chain alignment and to make sure there will be enough room to adjust primary chain once fitted and all looks ok. I will need to space the rear wheel sprocket out by 1/4" or use an offset sprocket, but that is easy to sort out later on.
To celebrate I wheeled Junior outside to try it for size, going to fit just fine, even with me racin wellies on!!

A bit more time at the Junior yesterday and this morning, tanks and seat offered up to see that it all fits together ok. Triumph gearbox set up on wooden blocks to work out height to keep primary level and get the rear chain run right, I'll make up a temporary bridge fixing to mount it to the frame casting above it so I can then fabricate a lower subframe, this will pick up fixings at the rear engine plates and the hand drilled and tapped bosses on the lower frame rails to stiffen the whole lot up.

I had an hour or so in the workshop this evening so I put a BSA front end and rear wheel onto the Junior Scout frame. I will need to make up one bearing adapter for the headstock and a couple of spacers for the back wheel but otherwise its all good to go!

19" Dunlop rims front and rear will be fine for the 4.00x19 dirt tyres I plan to go on there.

Next on the todo list is to fit the tanks rear guard and seat, then I have to make up plates to fit the Triumph 4 speed box in the space where the Indian 3 speeder used to sit.

Took the SU off to sort out the timing hole plug which was chewed up, while the carb was off I changed the long belmouth (which sits just where my knee should be!) for an SU embossed pancake filter, had a seat to try it for size and theres a bit more legroom now, also looks so much better!
